The Bursa Festival began in 1962. That same year, one of the most important directors in Turkish cinema history, Metin Erksan, filmed Yılanların Öcü (“Revenge of the Snakes”). The film, which caused a stir at its premiere, was banned from international screenings for many years.

Time flows like water. This year marks the 63rd edition of the festival. We are honored to present the restored version of this immortal film, which is the same age as our festival.

Adapted from Fakir Baykurt’s novel of the same name, it is a powerful social drama. Set in a poor Anatolian village, the story vividly portrays class injustice, the pressure of tradition, and individual helplessness through a conflict over farmland. With its realistic style, striking visuals, and narrative that sheds light on rural life of the time, it is considered one of the pioneering works of the social realism movement in Turkish cinema. Starring Fikret Hakan and Aliye Rona, the film owes much of its unforgettable quality to Metin Erksan’s direction.
